Description

Entry for the "alternate ending" contest at :iconphantom-of-da-opera: . Also an experiment with panel format.

In case you can't tell what the hell is happening in this pic (as may very well be the case - I'm not sure I handled this so well), some explanation:
In this Final Lair Scene, the Phantom has killed Raoul because, well, he's Raoul. He killed Mme. Giry because she was trying to stop him. He then killed Christine in a jealous rage. (He smothered her with a pillow! Literary reference! Get it?? Othello) So he's sitting there in despair while Meg, having found her way down there, witnessed the three murders and been driven totally batshit crazy, takes the letter opener from her mother's body (he stabbed her with a letter opener. It seemed appropriate) and kills our dear Erik. Then we have that iconic last Meg-holding-mask moment.
Or I could just tell you to imagine the last scene of Sweeney Todd and you'd get the idea... I guess this is sort of a crossover.

Line art drawn and inked traditionally, colored in Photoshop with tablet. A couple textures from some site I can't remember now. And I don't think you can even walk like that in pointe shoes, mleh

Oh, those images are heartbreaking. _Especially_ the second one, with the clear hint of Meg standing there looking down at her mudered mother. Eric, you stupid, crazy §$%.

(Not that Raoul dead isn't bad enough.)

I like the idea very much because it's really very realistic; the entire finale scene of the musical, and the original book, and the Susan Kay book is really that Eric is losing it and a hair's breath away from murdering Christine. (And even so: murdering Madame Giry seems extra-evil, because she had his back long enough, and with her poor daughter watching!) In this alternative ending of yours, I imagine he wouldn't even have bothered with fighting off Meg.

I read panel 3 and 4 as Christine having been stabbed, too, and Eric trying to staunch the bleeding with the pillow. (I can't quite see him murdering her with a pillow, maybe because he's established as fighting with a knife and lasso, and of course he could easily kill her barehanded.) The end was pretty clear, what with Meg holding that bloody knife ... it's a wonderful job at story-telling! And that look of Meg in the last panel is so haunting; she looks shell-shocked.
